Day of AI Australia – Empowering Future Innovators

The mission of Day of AI Australia is both urgent and inspiring: to empower every Australian primary and high school student - and their teachers - with critical AI literacy skills.

We believe that every student deserves the opportunity to understand, explore, and thrive in an AI-powered future. Since 2022, Day of AI has grown from an idea to being on track to impact the lives of 150,000 school kids this year.

From Pilot to National Movement

Four years ago, we spotted something special: a new program from MIT RAISE (Responsible AI for Social Empowerment and Education) and i2 Learning called Day of AI (big thanks to Ethan Berman!). We knew right away it had potential, and brought it to life in Australia.

Back then, it was just us, sleeves rolled up, running the show. But momentum breeds opportunity. So, we teamed up with UNSW, established an independent organisation as a charity, and built a passionate team – hello Natasha Banks, Jake Renzella, and Jess Xu – laying the foundation for real, scalable impact.

Today, we’re proud to be working alongside a growing coalition of partners and supporters who share our vision. The results? They speak for themselves. Each year, we reach more students, more schools, and more communities, and we’re just getting started.

What Is Day of AI?

Day of AI Australia is a hands-on education initiative that helps students and teachers understand, question, and use artificial intelligence (AI) responsibly. Day of AI Australia is tailored for Australian classrooms in partnership with UNSW, Microsoft, and CSIRO. Through our philanthropic funders and our growing network of corporate partners, we are able to provide this foundational AI literacy program free of charge for teachers and students in Years 1–10.

Why Does it Matter?

AI is transforming everything: from how we work and study to how we live our day-to-day lives. That’s why AI literacy can’t be optional. Day of AI offers hands-on, engaging, curriculum-aligned content that empowers young people to not just understand AI, but to be responsible and safe users and future designers of AI tools.

Australia’s education system has faced challenges keeping pace with digital transformation. Many teachers lack confidence teaching AI, and too many students – especially girls, First Nations learners, and those in regional or low-SES areas – are missing out on STEM and digital opportunities. Day of AI levels the playing field through:

  • Easy-to-use lesson plans for Years 1–10 that any teacher can run
  • Scaffolded lesson streams for Years 1–2, 3–6, and 7–10
  • Real-world, hands-on activities and locally relevant case studies
  • Curriculum alignment details

Scaling Up: What We’ve Achieved

In 2024, over 74,600 students in 289 schools participated. We’re currently on track to reach our target of 150,000 students in 2025.

We’ve grown from 5 to 24 curriculum-aligned lessons covering AI ethics, bias, generative AI, and more, thanks to our funding partners, we’re delivering more value, and more impact for less, with cost per student falling from $211 in 2022 to just over $6 in 2024. This year we hope this to be under $3.

Building A Movement

From just 5 partners at launch in 2022 to 24 today, Day of AI is supported by powerhouses like UNSW, Microsoft, Officeworks, Rokt, Commonwealth Bank, Hydro Tasmania, CSIRO, and Questacon.

In 2024, thanks to Officeworks and Google Chromebooks, 94 laptops were donated to schools in need. In 2025, that number will double!

Champions in Classrooms

Our Classroom Champions program launched in 2024, training STEM undergrads from five universities to deliver lessons in low-SES government schools. More than half of our 2024 Champions were young women, with strong representation in the cohort from diverse backgrounds.

In 2025, we’ve partnered with three more universities, with a partnership in place in all states and territories.

Champions are inspiring near-peer role models – their presence bridges the gap between theory and real-world application, showing young people that STEM and AI are for everyone.

What’s Next?

With 24 full lessons, strong partners, and a clear vision, 2025 will be our biggest year yet. Day of AI is core to TDM Foundation’s strategy to maximise impact – especially for students most at risk in the digital divide.

We’re staying laser-focused on:

  • Doubling reach
  • Reducing cost per student
  • Ensuring quality, equity, and real-world relevance

Day of AI isn’t just a program, it’s a movement. One that empowers teachers, inspires students, and shapes a smarter, fairer future.
